2012: It's All On The Line!

A Report by the Michigan Democratic Congressional Delegation
October 21, 2012

Strengthening and Preserving Medicare
• Democrats closed the donut hole to lower prescription drug costs for seniors, increased preventative health screenings for Medicare recipients and extended the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by 8 years - all without cutting 1 cent of Medicare benefits.
• The Ryan/Romney plan would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher program, limiting seniors’ ability to choose their doctors and putting private health care decisions back into the hands of insurance companies.

Fighting to Protect Working Families
• Democrats have fought back against the GOP's anti-worker agenda and they're strongly supporting ballot initiatives to strengthen Michigan's middle-class. Working to ensure equal pay for equal work, the first bill President Obama signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
• Republicans in the House have repeatedly voted to limit collective bargaining rights, end Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements and defund the National Labor Relations Board.

Standing up for our Auto Industry
• President Obama stood with Michigan's auto workers by making sure our manufacturers got the loans they needed to survive and grow. Today, because of this critical support, over one million jobs have been saved, over 160,000 auto jobs have been created and with new advanced vehicles coming off the line, Michigan's auto industry has come roaring back.
• When it was all on the line for our auto industry, Mitt Romney turned his back on Michigan by arguing that we should “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”

Presidential Debate

Gretchen Whitmer
October 2, 2012

Friends –

This Wednesday, the first debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney will not only provide us an opportunity to hear from the two candidates directly, but is a chance for them to show that beyond the carefully scripted campaign speeches and commercials, they actually have the necessary plan to do what’s right for America.

Senate Democrats Introduce Legislation to Protect Military Servicemembers’ Votes
New bills will make it easier for overseas servicemembers to vote following recent delayed distribution of absentee ballots.

Lansing – Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Senate Democrats introduced legislation today that would ensure the votes of state military personnel serving overseas are properly counted. The new bills would allow for deployed servicemembers’ absentee ballots to be counted as long as they were postmarked by Election Day and would also allow them to submit their absentee ballots electronically. Another bill in the package would allow for statewide online voter registration.
