Tell the Republicans in Congress: Don't Dismantle Medicare

By Mark Brewer, MDP Chair
Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Washington Republicans are pushing an extreme plan to end Medicare and we need your help to stop it.

Last week, House Republicans passed a plan to end Medicare and dismantle Medicaid. Medicare would be replaced by a voucher scheme that would put seniors at the mercy of big insurance company bureaucrats. States would have no choice but to significantly cut the safety and quality of nursing homes, putting America's seniors in danger of abuse and neglect. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the plan would dramatically increase healthcare costs for seniors.

Shared Sacrifice? Really?

We can’t afford Governor Snyder’s $2 billion tax cut to special interests like CEOs, big corporations, insurance companies and big banks, all while asking our seniors, children, middle-class families and low-wage workers to pick up the tab.

We need to stand up and tell Gov. Snyder that devastating cuts to public education, eliminating the earned income tax credit (EITC) and sharply raising taxes on our seniors is no way to “re-invent” Michigan. It’s not “shared sacrifice” and it’s no way to create jobs in Michigan.

While we applaud Governor Snyder for attempting to take on these big challenges in his budget proposal, Democrats believe his budget has the wrong priorities.
