What is Fascism?

By John DuLong - Posted on 11 March 2013

At the last meeting of the club I am afraid I babbled on about fascism and the danger of going down the path of fascism in the United States. As our political opponents often cast the claim that we are fascists, I thought perhaps we should be more cautious of how we use the term and what exactly it means.

The best explanation I have ever seen is in a short article by Laurence W. Britt which can be found at http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=library&page=britt_23_2, the website of the Council for Secular Humanism. He lays out fourteen points that we should consider as continuums and not discrete categories.

As you read over these points ask yourself if we have moved forward or backward on any of these points over the last few decades. And ask yourself is it the left or the right that leans more often towards fascism.
